Beyond the Immersive Rim: what dwells behind the darkness, visu-auditive sculptures, 2024
"Beyond the Immersive Rim" poses the question of the "instantaneous real" as part and even precondition of the virtual, and conversely, as a result of the virtual: the concrete space, the concrete instrument, the concrete electroacoustic setup. Beyond marketing and fashionable terms like "Virtual Reality," "Spatial Audio," "4D Sound," and "total immersion," auditory experiences emerge that ultimately provoke and address perception and its inexhaustible learning processes, rather than the technology or the instrument.
Three sounding sculptures are synchronized and intricately linked which allows me to use them as a unified multi-channel loudspeaker instrument in any given built architecture. Sound exciters, though not visible, are situated within the sculptures, rendering them easily recognizable to the audience as visual objects, yet not as sources of sound. Sounds can morph and move between the visual objects creating a hybrid spatial sound experience that blurs the distinction between "real" and "unreal" within a tangible, physical space.
